B1 English Listening: Why I Skip Breakfast

Hey, I'm Jim. Today, I want to tell you why I skip breakfast. I know, I know. "But Jim, it's the most important meal of the day." To me, it isn't. The truth is, I'm not hungry in the morning. I usually work late, so I don't eat dinner until after eight o'clock at night. When I wake up the next day, my stomach's still full from dinner. So, I usually just have a cup of coffee in the morning. I drink it while I message my friends on my phone and listen to a podcast.

Another reason I skip breakfast is that I don't like to feel heavy in the morning. I bike to work, so I don't want my food to accidentally come up while I'm on the road. When I get to the office, I usually just have a drink of water before I start work.

Will I change this habit in the future? It's possible. It depends on my schedule. If I get a job with better hours, and if I eat dinner earlier, and if I don't have to bike to work, I might change my routine. But for now, this is what works for me.

By the way, I wasn't always like this. When I was a kid, my mom didn't let us leave the house until we had breakfast. Oh, when I say "us," I mean me and my two sisters. Anyway, our mom usually made boiled eggs, ham sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, or cereal in the morning. She always said, "You need energy to focus on your school work!" I didn't question her then because she was probably right. But back then, we also had dinner at five o'clock, So, by breakfast time the next day, I was hungry.

Anyway, that's me. If you're asking when I eat my first meal of the day, the answer is around one p.m. I practice intermittent fasting. Between dinner and my next meal, I usually don't eat for sixteen or seventeen hours. I suppose the most amazing thing is that I don't feel tired or hungry during this time. I'm so focused on my job that I don't really have time to think about food.
