B1 English Listening: How I Get to Work

Listen to three people talk about how they get to work.

  1. Thomas

I live in the suburbs, but my job is in the city. I wish I could bike to work, but it's just too far. So, I usually take the bus. It's not so bad. There is a special bus lane on the highway, so I'm never late even if there is a lot of traffic on the road. The only downside is that the bus is always packed. Luckily, I usually get a seat since my stop is early on the bus route. My favourite part of taking the bus is that I get around forty-five minutes to myself every morning and every late afternoon. It gives me a chance to catch up on some reading or to message my family and friends.

  1. Linda

Before, I used to drive to the office, but now, I work from home, so I never have to leave my house. I just wake up, get ready for the day, say bye to my kids and husband, and then I start my day. When I worked at the office, I really didn't like driving every day, and because I had a young family, it was very inconvenient. I couldn't just leave to pick up my kids from school if one of them got sick, for instance. Now, it's much easier. I feel more in control of my life. When I started working from home, I did feel a little lonely, but now, I can't imagine my work life any other way.

  1. Rob

I always drive my truck to work. I'm a construction worker, so I never work in the same place for too long. Sometimes, the job is thirty minutes from my house. Sometimes it's an hour and half. I just go where the work is. I really don't like working far away because that means I have to take the highway, and the highway means traffic. I mean, it's not so bad in the morning. I'm an early riser, so I'm on the road while most people are still sleeping. But I always get stuck in rush hour traffic on the way home. Anyway, I like my job and the money is good, so I shouldn't complain. I just wish the gas prices were lower these days.
